01. Introduction to Objects

An object is a set of variables and functions that is used to create a model of something. The concept of viewing each model in programming comes from a paradigm called object-oriented programming.

Object-oriented programming

The aim of object-oriented programmingis to model objects in programming with variables and methods that describe its characteristics and what it can do.

Properties

Properties are object variables that describe the object. For example, pretend that the object we are describing is a car. To access that car's properties, we use the dot notation (aka member operator), followed by the property name.

car.color  // our car's color
car.make   // the make
car.model  // the model

Methods

An object can also have methods, which define how the object behaves. Our car may have a drive() or accelerate() function.

car.drive = function() {
  this.velocity = 60;  // km per hour
}

Here, the this keyword refers to the object to which the function belongs to. Thus, it's setting a particular object's own velocity to 60.
